Lake Manitoba update: September 26, 2021

(Submitted by Dr. Scott Forbes)

Calm winds give us a good look at lake levels right now, and it is clear that with another dry week, the lakes have resumed their decline. Lake Manitoba is down to 810.35 feet, down 0.05 feet, 0.15 feet below the bottom end of the desired operating range. The temperatures are warm enough for evaporation to continue, which lowers the lake level. Outflow at Fairford River is now a trickle at just 554 cfs. Inflow from the Waterhen River is also low at 1,589 cfs. Lake Winnipegosis is down from last week at 829.61 feet. Flow on the Whitemud River has nearly stopped at just 11 cfs. Lake St. Martin is unchanged from last week 796.40 feet, well below the lower end of the desired operating range of 797.0 feet. Flow on the Dauphin River is down to 812 cfs this week. Flow on the Assiniboine is down to 512 cfs at Holland and is up a bit to 660 cfs at Headingly. The level of the Shellmouth Reservoir is down on the week to 1400.14 feet.

Lake Manitoba Update September 6, 2021

Compiled and reported by Dr. Scott Forbes.

Winds are still playing havoc with the gauges, making lake level estimates uncertain, but it looks like the level of Lake Manitoba is about the same as last week at 810.49 feet. That is just a hair under the bottom end of the normal operating range. Flow on the Fairford River is down to 773 cfs, and that has less to do with lake level and more with wind pushing water away from the river. Inflow from the Waterhen River is down to 1,872 cfs. Lake Winnipegosis is down to 829.89 feet. Flow on the Whitemud River has dropped to 28 cfs and continues to fall. Lake St. Martin is down to 796.58 feet, still well below the lower end of the desired operating range of 797.0 feet. Flow on the Dauphin River is up to 996 cfs this week. Flow on the Assiniboine has crested and is now falling, reading 600 cfs at Holland and 614 cfs at Headingly. The level of the Shellmouth Reservoir is down slightly on the week to 1401.08 feet.
