Lake Manitoba update: May 29, 2016

Shifting winds are making it difficult again to get a read on the level of Lake Manitoba. The current readings suggest the lake rose over the last week to 812.16 feet, but I don’t have confidence in that number. If the winds calm this week, I’ll post an updated number. With the shifting winds outflow at Fairford fell to 5,966 cfs, while the inflow from the Waterhen rose to 6,072 cfs. Flow on the Whitemud remains at 378 cfs but is rising with the recent rains. The level of Lake St. Martin has risen to 800.59 feet, a level that may be wind-affected.

Flow on the Assiniboine fell to 3,565 cfs at Holland and 3,707 cfs at Headingly.

Lake Manitoba update: May 22, 2016

Strong south winds are affecting the gauge readings today, driving up the level of the north basin of Lake Manitoba, increasing outflow at Fairford, and decreasing flow on the Waterhen. The mean level of Lake Manitoba is currently 812.01 feet. Outflow at Fairford has risen to 7,237 cfs, while the inflow from the Waterhen has fallen to 5,472 cfs. Flow on the Whitemud is dropping and is now 378 cfs. The level of Lake St. Martin has fallen to 800.33 feet.

Flow on the Assiniboine is falling quickly, being 4,165 cfs at Holland, and 4,766 cfs at Headingly.

Lake Manitoba update: May 15, 2016

The wind is playing havoc with the gauges on Lake Manitoba. The readings currently show a level little changed from last week (811.99 feet) but with the water sloshing around in the lake, it is difficult to get an accurate read. Outflow at Fairford is currently 6,248 cfs, while the inflow at Waterhen is 6,001 cfs and on the Whitemud is 544 cfs. The level of Lake St. Martin is almost unchanged from last week sitting at 800.52 feet.

Flows on the upper Assiniboine continue to drop. Inflow to the Shellmouth Reservoir two days ago was just 2,419 cfs, with outflow from the reservoir 2,605 cfs, and the reservoir level has started to drop.

Flow on the lower Assiniboine reached its peak about a week ago and is now falling, being 5,507 cfs at Holland, and 5,930 cfs at Headingly.

Lake Manitoba update: May 8, 2016

Another dry week and almost everything is unchanged from last week. The level of Lake Manitoba is sitting at 812.01 feet: it was 812.02 feet last week. Outflow at Fairford is sitting at 6,001 cfs, while the inflow at Waterhen is 5,648 cfs and on the Whitemud has fallen to 593 cfs. Thus outflow and the major river inflows remain roughly in balance. The level of Lake St. Martin is unchanged fro last week sitting at 800.51 feet.

Flows on the upper Assiniboine continue to drop. Inflow to the Shellmouth Reservoir was down to 3,800 cfs yesterday with outflow at 3,559 cfs. The reservoir continues to rise, but now very very slowly.

Flow on the lower Assiniboine rose from last week to 6,319 cfs at Holland, but reached its peak on May 5 and is now falling. The flow at Headingly has reached 6,672 cfs and is probably at its peak right now.

Lake Manitoba update: May 1, 2016

A dry week in southern Manitoba has helped considerably. Lake Manitoba rose, but only slightly to 812.02 feet, up 0.02 feet from last week. Outflow at Fairford has finally started to rise and is now sitting at 6,107 cfs, while the inflow at Waterhen is 5,613 cfs and on the Whitemud is 635 cfs. Thus outflow and the major river inflows are nearly in balance. The level of Lake St. Martin dropped slightly this week to 800.51 feet, down 0.08 feet from last week.

Flows on the upper Assiniboine are now dropping quickly. Inflow to the Shellmouth Reservoir was down to 4,600 cfs yesterday with outflow at 3,500 cfs. The reservoir continues to rise, but now very slowly.

Flow on the lower Assiniboine rose to 5,966 cfs at Holland and 6,107 cfs at Headingly.
