Outlook for Lake Manitoba

The heavy rains last week resulted in a rise in the level of Lake Manitoba.

The current estimate of the wind-eliminated level of the lake is approximately 814.4 feet. This estimate is imprecise as strong winds in recent days have caused large local fluctuations in lake levels. With additional lake level data from the month of August, we now have a revised estimate of the peak level of Lake Manitoba. It reached 814.56 feet on 29 July 2014. The lake level thus has dropped slightly less than 2/10ths of a foot from its peak level over the last month. It now appears unlikely that the lake will fall below flood level (814.0 feet) in September. The current river outflow is about 3565 cfs (Waterhen + Whitemud inflow – Fairford outflow), which is sufficient to drop the lake level only 2.2 inches per month. How quickly the lake level will fall now depends largely on air temperature and rainfall.
